Samuel's Journey to Employment: A Story of Growth and Resilience

When Samuel joined Te Tahi Youth's Employment Pilot Programme on October 1st, 2024, he had been receiving the job seeker benefit for around 18 months. Despite his efforts to find work, securing a job had been a struggle. With support from his MSD Case Manager, Samuel was referred to the programme, led by Pilot Lead Caitlin, who also became his Employment Navigator. Eager to regain his confidence and find meaningful work, Samuel embraced the opportunity.

At their first meeting, Samuel was reserved and uncertain. He shared how frequent relocations had disrupted his education and social connections, leading to a loss of self-confidence. Yet, he was determined to change his situation and fully committed to the support offered through the Employment Coaching Programme.

From the start, Samuel’s dedication was clear. He attended every meeting, workshop, and site visit punctually, approaching each session with a positive and open mindset. He actively engaged with Caitlin, welcomed feedback, and worked hard to improve his employability skills.

A pivotal moment in Samuel's journey was participating in mock interviews with Te Tahi Youth's Business Opportunity Broker, Jane Denton. These sessions allowed him to practice answering interview questions and presenting himself professionally. With guidance, Samuel refined his CV and crafted compelling cover letters tailored to specific roles.

His hard work began to pay off. Samuel earned both a first aid certificate and a moving and handling certificate, strengthened his teamwork and focus through employability workshops, and gained valuable experience during a workplace site visit. He also practiced driving with family support to build confidence behind the wheel and is now working toward obtaining his restricted driver’s license.

Samuel’s breakthrough came when he submitted a standout video application that earned him an in-person interview. The employer’s feedback was glowing: “Samuel interviewed well and asked great questions. We’d like to offer him a job trial.” Samuel excelled during the trial and secured a permanent part-time position, with the goal of transitioning to full-time work in the future.

Reflecting on his experience, Samuel shared, “The programme helped me get out of the house, meet with someone weekly, and regain my confidence. The workshops pushed me out of my comfort zone and improved my skills in crafting CVs and cover letters.”

Te Tahi Youth's Employment Pilot Programme not only supports young people like Samuel in finding meaningful work but also challenges negative stereotypes about those on job seeker benefits. By bridging the gap between young job seekers and potential employers, the programme helps unlock the potential of Ōtautahi youth.

Samuel’s next steps include maintaining his current role and working toward full-time employment. He’s also focused on obtaining his restricted driver’s license to further his independence.

His advice to other young people considering the programme: “It’s a great opportunity. The employment navigators are there to help you, and the benefits go beyond finding work – you gain consistent support, attend workshops, and meet new people.”

Samuel's story is a powerful testament to perseverance and the transformative impact of Te Tahi Youth’s Employment Pilot Programme.
