Honouring Nathan’s commitment to community and support.
At Te Tahi, we are often celebrating the achievements of our young people, but now we’re so proud to share that of one of our own. Nathan has been recognised with a Whanonga Pono Award for his outstanding work in supporting individuals as they reintegrate into the community.
This recognition is extra special because Nathan is one of the first people outside of the Department of Corrections to receive this award. It’s a huge testament to the impact of his mahi and the way he lives and breathes the Whānau value - building strong, supportive relationships that make a real difference.
The Whanonga Pono Awards acknowledge individuals who exemplify one or more of Ara Poutama’s core values in their work. These values guide and shape the way support is delivered, ensuring people receive the care, respect, and opportunities they need to thrive. The values include Rangatira (leadership and accountability), Wairua (unity and focus), Whānau (developing supportive relationships), Kaitiaki (being responsive and responsible), and Manaaki (caring for and respecting everyone). Nathan’s recognition falls under Whānau, which perfectly represents his approach to his work.
Nathan’s mahi focuses on helping individuals transition back into the community after time in the justice system. He works closely with them to find employment opportunities, build confidence, and foster positive relationships with employers and support networks.
The nomination highlighted the way Nathan creates real pathways for success, ensuring that each person he works with is set up with the right tools, connections, and encouragement to step into a brighter future. His ability to bridge the gap between people and opportunities has been life-changing for many.
Receiving this award is a milestone - not just for Nathan, but for the wider work being done outside of Corrections to support reintegration. It highlights the importance of collaboration between community organisations and Corrections in ensuring rangatahi have the right support when they leave the system. Nathan’s recognition proves that this approach works and makes a lasting impact.
Nathan, your dedication and passion are truly inspiring. Your ability to walk alongside people, advocate for them, and help them take those next steps is something to be celebrated. This award is so well deserved, and we couldn’t be prouder!
Mahi tiki ana Nathan! We’re lucky to have you on the team.
